What Should You Know About From Ship to Medieval City in 5 Minutes?

Rhodes has one of the best cruise port locations in the Mediterranean. Ships dock at the commercial harbor right next to the old town walls. We walked off the gangway, crossed the road, and reached the Marine Gate (also called the Sea Gate) in about 5 minutes โ€” roughly 400 meters. In our experience, five minutes of walking puts you inside a UNESCO-listed medieval city that looks like it hasn't changed since the Knights of St. John left in 1522. According to UNESCO, the Medieval City of Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. According to CLIA, the Mediterranean accounted for 19.4% of global cruise deployments in 2023. According to UNESCO, the Medieval City of Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. According to CLIA 2024 State of the Cruise Industry, 31.7 million passengers took ocean cruises worldwide in 2023. According to UNESCO, the Medieval City of Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. According to MedCruise, cruise passengers spend an average of 107 EUR per port visit on excursions, food, and shopping. According to UNESCO, the Medieval City of Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. According to Cruise Critic, independent shore excursions cost 40-60% less than ship-organized tours at most ports.

No shuttles, no taxis, no buses. Just walk.

What Should You Know About Understanding the Layout?

The Medieval City of Rhodes is divided into two main areas:

Rhodes medieval fortress walls and gate
The Palace of the Grand Master sits at the top of Rhodes' medieval Old Town
  • The Collachium (Knight's Quarter): The northern section where the Knights of St. John lived, governed, and worshipped. This is where the major monuments are. It's orderly, well-maintained, and relatively uncrowded.
  • The Hora (Turkish Quarter): The southern section, a maze of narrow streets with Ottoman-era mosques, small shops, and residential buildings. More chaotic, more atmospheric, and where you'll find the best food deals.

What Is the Best Walking Route for The Knight's Quarter? (2-3 Hours)

The Street of the Knights (Ippoton)

Enter through the Marine Gate, walk straight ahead through the small harbor square, and you'll reach the Street of the Knights within 3 minutes. This 200-meter cobblestone street is the best-preserved medieval street in Europe -- no shops, no restaurants, just the stone Inns of the various national groups of knights lining both sides.

The restaurants near the Marine Gate and along Sokratous Street (the main shopping street) are tourist traps charging 15-25 EUR for mediocre moussaka. Walk deeper into the Hora instead.

Each "Inn" (or tongue) was headquarters for knights from a specific country: France, England, Provence, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Auvergne. You can identify them by the coats of arms carved above the doorways. Walk slowly and look up.

Palace of the Grand Master

The Street of the Knights ends at the Palace of the Grand Master, the most impressive building in the old town. The Italians reconstructed it in the 1930s (the original was destroyed by an ammunition explosion in 1856), but the result is still imposing -- a castle within a castle.

  • Entrance: 8 EUR
  • Combo ticket (Palace + museums): 10 EUR
  • Time needed: 45-60 minutes
  • Tip: The ground floor mosaic collection (brought from Kos by the Italians) is more interesting than most of the upper floor rooms

The Walls Walk

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, you can walk along the top of the medieval walls. The walk starts at the Palace courtyard, covers about 1.5 km of the 4-km wall circuit, and offers views over the old town rooftops and out to the harbor where your ship is docked.

  • Entrance: Included with Palace ticket
  • Time needed: 30-40 minutes
  • Days: Tuesdays and Saturdays only

What Should You Know About The Turkish Quarter?

After the Knight's Quarter, head south into the Hora. The atmosphere shifts immediately -- narrow streets barely 2 meters wide, cats everywhere, bougainvillea cascading over walls, and the sound of your own footsteps echoing off stone.

Lindos village with white buildings and acropolis above
Lindos is a popular day trip from Rhodes โ€” 50 minutes by bus from the port

Don't try to navigate with a map. The streets aren't on a grid, and half of them have no name signs. Just wander. You'll stumble across the Suleiman Mosque (the pink-domed one visible from several blocks away), the Turkish baths, and dozens of small squares with fountain basins.

What Should You Know About Where to Eat?

The restaurants near the Marine Gate and along Sokratous Street (the main shopping street) are tourist traps charging 15-25 EUR for mediocre moussaka. Walk deeper into the Hora instead.

  • Budget: A souvlaki or gyros plate costs 5-7 EUR in the back streets near the Hora
  • Mid-range: A seated taverna lunch with grilled fish, salad, and wine: 15-22 EUR per person
  • Best value: Look for places where the menu is handwritten in Greek and English, not laminated with photos

What Should You Know About What to Skip?

The Colossus of Rhodes stood somewhere near the harbor entrance, but there's nothing to see today -- it fell in an earthquake in 226 BC. The "Colossus" souvenir stands near the port are just selling marked-up trinkets. Don't waste time looking for a landmark that hasn't existed for 2,200 years.

Lindos (the clifftop acropolis village on the east coast) is beautiful but 50 km away. A bus takes 1 hour each way and costs 5.50 EUR. Only attempt it if your ship is in port for 9+ hours.

What Are the Key Practical Tips?

  • Shoes: The cobblestones in the medieval city are uneven and can be slippery. Sandals work but closed-toe shoes with grip are better, especially inside the fortress and on the walls walk.
  • Water: There are public drinking fountains scattered through the Old Town -- look for the stone spouts built into walls. Tap water in Rhodes is safe to drink.
  • Timing: The Palace of the Grand Master gets the tour groups between 10:00-11:30 AM. Arrive at 9:00 AM or after 2:00 PM for a quieter experience. The Turkish Quarter is best in the late morning when the shadows are deep and the narrow streets are at their most photogenic.
  • Shopping: Sokratous Street is the main shopping strip -- it's been a market street since medieval times. Leather sandals, ceramics, and sponges are the traditional buys. Prices are negotiable at market stalls but fixed in established shops.

What Should You Know About Beach Option?

If you finish the Old Town early and want to cool off, Elli Beach is a 15-minute walk north from the Marine Gate along the eastern waterfront. It's a pebble beach with sunbed rental (8-10 EUR for two beds and an umbrella) and several beachfront bars. The water is clean and clear. It won't win any awards for seclusion, but for a quick swim steps from the port, it does the job.
