TL;DR (source: Visit Naples)

Where to find authentic Neapolitan pizza near the Naples cruise port. Real pizzerias within walking distance, what to order, how much to pay, and which tourist trap spots to avoid.

What Should You Know About You Cannot Leave Naples Without Eating Pizza?

This is not optional. Naples is the birthplace of pizza. The Neapolitan pizza you eat here -- wood-fired, with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, and a charred, blistered crust -- is fundamentally different from anything you've had back home or on the ship. This is the original, and it costs less than a drink at the pool bar. According to UNESCO, Naples was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and Neapolitan pizza-making was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017. According to EAV Circumvesuviana, the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompeii takes 36 minutes and costs 3.60 EUR. A proper Margherita in Naples costs 4-7 EUR. If you're paying more than 10 EUR for a pizza in Naples, you're in a tourist trap.

What Should You Know About The Rules of Neapolitan Pizza (So You Know What You're Getting)?

  • Real Neapolitan pizza is soft in the center. It's not meant to be eaten in slices held like a New York slice. You eat it with a knife and fork, or you fold it. The center will be slightly wet from the fresh mozzarella. This is correct, not a deficiency.
  • The menu is short. An authentic pizzeria serves maybe 10-15 types of pizza. If the menu has 40 options plus pasta plus seafood plus burgers, walk out.
  • There will be a queue. At the best places, you wait. This is normal. If a pizzeria has no queue at lunchtime, there's usually a reason.
  • Speed is part of the art. Your pizza will arrive 5-8 minutes after ordering. Neapolitan pizza cooks in 60-90 seconds in a 485-degree Celsius wood oven. Don't be alarmed by how fast it appears.

What Should You Know About The Best Pizzerias Within Walking Distance of the Cruise Port?

The Naples cruise terminal (Stazione Marittima) sits on the waterfront at the edge of the city center. The best pizza is a 10-25 minute walk from the port, concentrated in the Centro Storico (historic center) and along the Spaccanapoli street.

When we tested pizzerias across all four neighborhoods, the difference in quality between a 4 EUR Spaccanapoli margherita and a 12 EUR port-area version was stark โ€” the cheaper pizza was genuinely better.

A proper Margherita in Naples costs 4-7 EUR. If you're paying more than 10 EUR for a pizza in Naples, you're in a tourist trap.

Sorbillo (Via dei Tribunali, 32) -- 20-Minute Walk

Gino Sorbillo is probably the most famous pizzaiolo in Naples. His flagship on Via dei Tribunali draws enormous crowds, but the pizza justifies the wait. The Margherita (5 EUR) is textbook perfect -- blistered crust, fresh basil, still bubbling from the oven.

  • Distance from port: 1.5 km, about 20 minutes walking
  • Queue time: 20-45 minutes at peak lunch hours (12:00-2:00 PM). Go before 12:00 or after 2:30.
  • Order: Margherita. Start with the original before trying variations.
  • Price: Margherita 5 EUR, specialty pizzas 7-9 EUR

Di Matteo (Via dei Tribunali, 94) -- 18-Minute Walk

Slightly less famous than Sorbillo but equally excellent, with shorter queues. Di Matteo is also known for its pizza fritta (fried pizza) -- a folded pizza pocket that's deep-fried and served hot. At 3 EUR for a pizza fritta, it's the best street food value in the city.

  • Distance from port: 1.4 km, about 18 minutes walking
  • Queue time: 10-25 minutes, often shorter than Sorbillo
  • Order: One sit-down Margherita AND one pizza fritta from the street window to eat while walking
  • Price: Margherita 4.50 EUR, pizza fritta 3 EUR

Dal Presidente (Via dei Tribunali, 120) -- 17-Minute Walk

Named after Bill Clinton's visit in 1994, Dal Presidente serves some of the best pizza in the Tribunali corridor with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere. The ripieno (stuffed pizza) here is exceptional.

  • Distance from port: 1.4 km, about 17 minutes walking
  • Queue time: 10-20 minutes, usually the shortest of the Tribunali big three
  • Order: Margherita or the ripieno al forno (baked stuffed pizza, 6 EUR)
  • Price: Margherita 5 EUR, specialty 6-8 EUR

Pizzeria Port'Alba (Via Port'Alba, 18) -- 15-Minute Walk

Claims to be the oldest pizzeria in the world (founded 1738). Whether or not that's historically precise, it's been making pizza for a very long time and it's slightly closer to the cruise port than the Tribunali options. Sit-down place with table service.

  • Distance from port: 1.2 km, about 15 minutes walking
  • Queue time: Usually minimal, especially if you go at opening
  • Order: Marinara (no cheese, just tomato, garlic, oregano, olive oil -- 4 EUR) to taste the purest expression of Neapolitan pizza
  • Price: Pizzas 4-8 EUR

What Should You Know About What to Avoid?

The waterfront area immediately surrounding the cruise terminal has several restaurants with pizza on the menu. Most of them are tourist traps serving mediocre food at inflated prices to captive cruise passengers who don't want to walk.

Red flags:

  • Photos of food on the menu outside
  • Staff standing outside actively soliciting customers
  • Menus in 6 languages with pizza costing 12+ EUR
  • "Tourist menu" deals that include pizza plus drink plus dessert
  • Any pizzeria that also serves sushi, burgers, or "international cuisine"

Walk 15 minutes inland. Just 15 minutes. The quality difference between waterfront tourist pizza and a Via dei Tribunali pizzeria is so dramatic it's almost comical.

What Should You Know About Beyond Pizza: Quick Bites Near the Port?

While pizza is the main event, Naples has other street food worth trying if you have time:

  • Sfogliatella: A shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta and candied citrus. The crispy (riccia) version is better than the smooth (frolla). About 2-3 EUR at any bakery. Pintauro on Via Toledo is the famous one.
  • Cuoppo: A paper cone of fried seafood or vegetables. Sold at street stalls for 5-7 EUR. Perfect for eating while walking.
  • Espresso: Naples espresso culture is intense and excellent. A caffe at the bar (standing) costs 1-1.50 EUR. Sit down and it doubles.

Our Naples guide includes a dedicated food walking route from the cruise port through the Centro Storico, hitting the best pizzerias, bakeries, and coffee bars with GPS-verified directions and a realistic time estimate.

What Should You Know About Timing It Right?

If you're doing Pompeii and pizza in the same day (and you should), go to Pompeii first thing in the morning, return to Naples by early afternoon, and eat pizza on the way back to the ship. The Circumvesuviana train drops you at Garibaldi station, which is a 20-minute walk from Via dei Tribunali. This way you eat pizza when you're hungry after a morning of ruins, not when you're still full from the ship's breakfast buffet. (Pompeii on Wikipedia)
