How to spend one day in Mykonos from the cruise port in 2026. Getting to Mykonos Town, best beaches, Little Venice, windmills, and what to skip on a short port call.
What Should You Know About Where Your Ship Actually Stops?
Mykonos has two port areas, and which one you use depends on your ship's size and the day's conditions. (Mykonos on Wikipedia) According to CLIA 2024 State of the Cruise Industry, 31.7 million passengers took ocean cruises worldwide in 2023. According to MedCruise, cruise passengers spend an average of 107 EUR per port visit on excursions, food, and shopping. According to Cruise Critic, independent shore excursions cost 40-60% less than ship-organized tours at most ports. According to CLIA, the Mediterranean accounted for 19.4% of global cruise deployments in 2023.
Old Port (Tourlos area or the town harbor): Smaller ships sometimes anchor and tender passengers directly into Mykonos Town's old harbor. You step off the tender and you're already in the maze of white streets. This is the best-case scenario.
New Port (Tourlos): Most large cruise ships dock at the new port, about 2 km north of Mykonos Town. From here, you need transport into town.
How Do You Get to the New Port to Mykonos Town?
- Shuttle bus: 2 EUR each way, runs every 15-20 minutes. Drops you at the old port/bus station area. This is what most people use.
- Taxi: 8-12 EUR to town. Taxis are notoriously scarce on Mykonos, especially when multiple ships are in port. If you see one, take it.
- Walking: 2 km along the coastal road, about 25 minutes. Doable but exposed with no shade and a narrow road shoulder. Not recommended in summer heat.
What Should You Know About Morning: Mykonos Town (Chora)?
Start in the Chora, which is what locals call Mykonos Town. The whitewashed streets are famously photogenic but also famously confusing -- they were designed to disorient pirates, and they'll disorient you too. That's part of the charm. You can't really get lost because the town is small. Every wrong turn leads to another postcard view. According to Hellenic Ports Association, Mykonos welcomed over 700,000 cruise passengers in 2023, with ships anchoring offshore and tendering to the old port. Hit these spots in order, starting from the old port area:
- Paraportiani Church (5 minutes from the port) -- The most photographed church in Greece. Five chapels merged into one asymmetric white structure. Free to visit, 10 minutes is enough.
- Little Venice (2 minutes further) -- Colorful buildings with balconies hanging directly over the sea. This is where the iconic sunset photos come from, but it's beautiful at any time. The waterfront bars here charge 10-15 EUR for a coffee or cocktail -- worth it once for the view.
- The Windmills (3 minutes from Little Venice) -- The row of 16th-century windmills on the ridge above Little Venice. Best photographed from the Little Venice side in the morning when the light is behind you.
What Should You Know About Midday: Pick Your Speed?
By late morning, you have a choice. Mykonos Town gets hot and crowded when all the cruise passengers arrive at once. Here are your options:
Option A: Stay in town. Wander the shopping streets (Matogianni Street is the main one), find a taverna in a quieter back alley, and have a long Greek lunch. A table lunch with fresh fish, salad, and wine runs 25-40 EUR per person. Avoid the restaurants on the main waterfront -- they charge 30-50% more for the same food.
Option B: Hit a beach. Mykonos has excellent beaches. From the bus station near the old port:
- Ornos Beach: 10 minutes by bus (1.80 EUR), the closest family-friendly beach. Sunbed rental: 10-15 EUR for two beds and an umbrella.
- Platis Gialos: 15 minutes by bus, wider beach with more restaurants. Sunbed rental: 15-20 EUR.
- Paradise Beach: 20 minutes by bus, the famous party beach. Loud music starts by noon. Skip this unless that's your thing.
Buses back to the port area run every 20-30 minutes until early evening. Check the schedule at the bus station so you don't get stranded.
What Should You Know About What to Skip?
Delos Island tours (the nearby archaeological site) take a minimum of 4 hours round trip and cost 50-80 EUR including the ferry and entrance. That's too tight for most cruise port calls. If your ship is in port for 10+ hours, it's doable, but for a standard 6-8 hour stop, skip Delos and enjoy Mykonos itself.
The "authentic Greek village experience" tours marketed at the port are a waste of money. Mykonos is tiny -- the whole island is only 85 square km. You can see the "authentic" parts just by walking 10 minutes in any direction from the town center.
What Should You Know About Getting Back to the Ship?
Allow 30 minutes from Mykonos Town to the new port, including waiting for the shuttle. If you're at a beach, add the bus time back to town first. Mykonos buses are generally reliable but can be packed on cruise ship days, so don't cut it to the last bus.
If you're tendering back (old port), the tender queue can take 20-30 minutes when everyone returns at the same time. Head back a bit earlier than your all-aboard time suggests.
What Are the Key Practical Tips?
- ATMs: There are ATMs in Mykonos Town near the bus station and on Matogianni Street. Greek ATMs sometimes run out of cash on busy cruise days -- withdraw money early.
- Prices: Mykonos is the most expensive Greek island. Coffee: 4-6 EUR. A basic lunch: 15-25 EUR. Beach cocktails: 12-18 EUR. Budget 60-80 EUR per person for a comfortable day with lunch and a beach stop.
- Wind: Mykonos is called the "Island of the Winds" for a reason. The meltemi wind blows hard from the north in July and August -- strong enough to knock hats off and make beaches on the north side unusable. South-facing beaches (Ornos, Platis Gialos) are sheltered.
- Dress code: If you want to enter any of the churches (Paraportiani included), shoulders and knees should be covered. Carry a light scarf.
Is One Day Enough?
For a taste of Mykonos, absolutely. You can see Little Venice, the windmills, the main town, and hit one beach in a 6-8 hour port call. You won't experience the Mykonos nightlife that the island is famous for (that doesn't start until midnight), and you won't reach the more remote beaches on the east coast. But as a cruise port day, Mykonos delivers plenty for the time you have.
