How to Maximize 8 Hours in Naples from the Cruise Port

By Jason Moon ยท May 6, 2026 ยท 10 min read

TL;DR

Naples gives you two options for 8 hours: Option A (Naples city only) โ€” Spaccanapoli walk, National Archaeological Museum, pizza lunch at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele; Option B (Pompeii + quick Naples) โ€” Pompeii by Circumvesuviana train (โ‚ฌ3.40 each way, 40 min), 3 hours at site, pizza at the station. Don't try to do Pompeii AND full Naples exploration โ€” you'll do neither properly.

The Fundamental Naples Port Day Decision

Naples is the only major Mediterranean cruise port where you face a genuine binary choice at the start of your day โ€” and where trying to split the difference leaves you doing neither thing well. Option A gives you one of Italy's most intense, overwhelming, and rewarding cities. Option B gives you one of the best-preserved Roman sites in the world. You have 8 hours. The transit to Pompeii and back takes 1.5 hours total. That leaves 6.5 hours at Pompeii, which is more than enough (you need 2.5-3 hours for a good Pompeii visit). But it leaves almost nothing for Naples itself.

Choose based on: have you done Naples before? (If yes, go to Pompeii.) Have you done Pompeii? (If yes, do Naples.) First time at both? Flip a coin โ€” both are extraordinary.

Option A: Naples City โ€” 8-Hour Itinerary

8:30 AM: Depart Ship, Walk to Spaccanapoli

Naples cruise terminal (Molo Beverello) is at the edge of the historic center. Walk northeast from the terminal along the waterfront for 15-20 minutes to reach the edge of the old city. Spaccanapoli ("split Naples") is the ancient Greek main street โ€” Decumanus Maximus โ€” that still bisects the historic city in a dead-straight line for 2.5 km. Begin at Via San Biagio dei Librai and walk west, stopping at:

The Church of San Gregorio Armeno (open mornings, free) on the street of the same name โ€” famous for its presepe (nativity scene) workshops, which operate year-round selling elaborately crafted ceramic and wooden figures. The craftsmanship is extraordinary and the shops are genuine artisan workshops, not tourist trinket sellers. The Veiled Christ sculpture in the Cappella Sansevero (entrance โ‚ฌ8, book ahead) โ€” a 1753 marble sculpture of breathtaking technical virtuosity where the marble appears to show a transparent cloth draped over a figure. It's one of the most technically astonishing artworks in Italy.

10:30 AM: National Archaeological Museum (90 minutes)

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN) holds the greatest collection of Roman antiquities in the world โ€” specifically, everything removed from Pompeii and Herculaneum over 250 years of excavation. The Farnese collection, the Greek bronzes, the mosaic floors from Pompeii's House of the Faun, and the Secret Cabinet (erotic art from Pompeii, now open to all). Entry is โ‚ฌ20 (mann-napoli.it). Allow 90 minutes for the highlights. The museum is about 1.5 km north of Spaccanapoli โ€” take a taxi (โ‚ฌ5-7) or walk 20 minutes.

12:30 PM: Pizza Lunch (60 minutes)

Naples invented pizza. The debate about who makes the best pizza in Naples is ancient and ongoing, but L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele (Via Cesare Sersale 1, founded 1870) serves only two pizzas โ€” Marinara and Margherita โ€” and is reliably extraordinary. Expect a queue of 20-40 minutes in peak season; take a number at the door. A pizza costs โ‚ฌ5-7. The queue time + lunch = 60-70 minutes. Worth every minute.

2:00 PM: Return to Ship

Walk or taxi back to Molo Beverello (20-30 minutes). You'll be back at the ship by 2:30-3 PM with time to spare.

Option B: Naples + Pompeii โ€” 8-Hour Itinerary

8:00 AM: Depart Ship, Walk to Naples Centrale Station

Walk from Molo Beverello northeast for 25-30 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi (Naples Centrale station), or take a taxi (โ‚ฌ8-10). Buy a Circumvesuviana train ticket to "Pompeii Scavi" โ€” the station directly at the archaeological site entrance. Cost: โ‚ฌ3.40 one way. Trains run every 20-30 minutes; journey time 38-42 minutes.

9:00 AM: Pompeii (3 hours)

Enter at Porta Marina, the main entrance. The essential route: Forum (political and commercial center), Via dell'Abbondanza (main commercial street), the Lupanar (brothel, with explicit frescoes indicating services), the thermal baths, the House of the Faun (famous mosaic, though the original is in the Naples museum). At the forum, take 10 minutes to orient from the site map โ€” Pompeii is large (66 hectares) and disorienting. Entry is โ‚ฌ16, or โ‚ฌ22 including Herculaneum (pompeiisites.org). Pre-book to skip the queue.

Pompeii in three hours is a selective experience. You will not see everything โ€” and you shouldn't try. Focus on the Forum area and Via dell'Abbondanza, which contain the most important and best-preserved structures.

12:30 PM: Quick Lunch at Pompeii

The town of Pompeii (adjacent to the archaeological site) has several restaurants near the train station. A pizza or pasta runs โ‚ฌ8-12. Take 45 minutes.

1:15 PM: Circumvesuviana back to Naples, Taxi to Ship

Train back to Naples Centrale (42 min). Taxi from Centrale to Molo Beverello (10-15 min, โ‚ฌ8-10). Back at ship by 3 PM.

Warning

The Circumvesuviana is a regional commuter train, not a tourist service. In peak summer, trains are crowded and occasionally delayed. Build 20-30 minutes of buffer into your return timing. Missing the all-aboard because of a train delay is not a hypothetical risk โ€” it happens. Know your ship's all-aboard time and work backward from it.

Is the Amalfi Coast doable from a Naples port day?

Technically yes, barely. The Amalfi Coast is 60-70 km from Naples โ€” 1.5-2 hours each way by hired car or ferry. This leaves 4-5 hours for the coast itself, which is tight. It's more viable on sailings that dock directly at Salerno. If Amalfi is your priority, ask your ship whether any itinerary alternative exists.

Is Naples safe to walk around independently?

The historic center and tourist areas are heavily trafficked and generally safe for normal tourist activity. Pickpocketing is more common in Naples than in most Italian cities โ€” keep bags secure and avoid displaying obvious camera equipment on crowded streets. The areas around the cruise terminal and the main tourist sights are not significantly risky. Our Naples cruise port guide has specific safety notes and neighborhood guidance.

Which is better โ€” Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Herculaneum (15 minutes closer to Naples by Circumvesuviana) is smaller, better preserved, and less crowded than Pompeii. The buildings are multi-story and intact to roof level in some areas. If you've already done Pompeii, Herculaneum on a second Naples visit is revelatory โ€” it's an entirely different experience. See also our Naples to Pompeii guide for detailed logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Naples safe for cruise passengers exploring independently?

The historic centre โ€” Spaccanapoli, Via Tribunali, the Waterfront โ€” is safe and heavily visited. Be alert in crowded areas for pickpockets, particularly around the Centrale station and Piazza Garibaldi. Keep bags on your front, avoid obvious map-checking in narrow alleys, and you'll have no issues. Naples has a gritty, chaotic energy that surprises some cruise passengers used to smaller, tidier ports, but it's far safer than reputation suggests.

How far is Pompeii from the Naples cruise port?

Pompeii is 25 km from Naples; Circumvesuviana regional trains run from Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale) to Pompeii Scavi station in about 35-40 minutes (โ‚ฌ3.20 each way). The station is 2 km from the cruise pier โ€” take the Metro line 1 or a taxi (โ‚ฌ8-12). Allow 2.5-3 hours at Pompeii. Combined with transit, a Pompeii round-trip takes about 4.5-5 hours total, leaving 3 hours to explore Naples itself.

What's the best pizza in Naples and how much does it cost?

Neapolitan pizza at the best traditional pizzerias (L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele, Sorbillo, Starita) costs โ‚ฌ5-9 for a full-size margherita or marinara. Expect a queue of 20-40 minutes at peak times. The pizza is Neapolitan-style โ€” soft, wet centre, charred crust, minimal toppings โ€” and is genuinely different from what you'll find elsewhere. It's worth having one proper pizza in Naples even if it takes time out of your day.

Can I do Pompeii, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast in one cruise day?

Not comfortably. Pompeii plus Naples is a full 8-hour day. Adding the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello) requires a 2-hour drive each way from Naples or 1.5 hours from Salerno โ€” realistically a separate day. Some ships call at Sorrento instead of Naples, which makes Amalfi more accessible. Do not try all three in one day; you'll see nothing properly and spend the day in transit.
