What Should You Know About The Experiment?

On a 7-day Mediterranean cruise hitting Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Santorini, and Naples, we compared the cost of the ship's shore excursions against doing essentially the same activities independently. Two adults, doing similar sightseeing at each port.

The results surprised even us.

What Should You Know About Port-by-Port Comparison?

PortShip ExcursionDIY CostSavings
Dubrovnik โ€” Old Town + Walls$149 pp ($298)Shuttle 10 EUR + Walls 35 EUR pp = ~$88$210
Kotor โ€” Walking Tour + Fortress$89 pp ($178)Walk from dock + Fortress 8 EUR pp = ~$18$160
Corfu โ€” Old Town + Achilleion$109 pp ($218)Walk to Old Town (free) + Taxi to Achilleion ~30 EUR return + Entry 10 EUR pp = ~$55$163

Naples โ€” Pompeii$119 pp ($238)Circumvesuviana 4.60 EUR pp + Entry 18 EUR pp = ~$50$188

Total ship excursions: $1,190. Total DIY: $241. Savings: $949. According to Dubrovnik Port Authority, Dubrovnik received over 1.1 million cruise passengers in 2023, making it the most-visited cruise port in Croatia. Even accounting for a few extra taxis and coffees, the real-world savings came to around $800. And we did essentially the same things the ship tours did, just on our own schedule.

"But What If I Miss the Ship?"

This is the fear that keeps the cruise excursion industry profitable. And it's worth addressing directly, because it's not entirely irrational.

The facts: If you book a ship-sponsored excursion and it runs late, the ship is contractually obligated to wait for you. If you're exploring independently and you're late, the ship leaves without you. This is real. It has happened to people.

The context: In any given cruise season, tens of thousands of passengers explore ports independently every single day. The number who actually miss ships is vanishingly small. Here's why:

  • Ships announce all-aboard times clearly (typically 30-60 minutes before departure)
  • Most port activities are within 15-30 minutes of the dock
  • You control your own schedule, so you can leave earlier than a tour group would
  • Your phone has maps, real-time transit info, and a clock

The rule we follow: Be back at the port 60 minutes before all-aboard. Not 60 minutes before departure โ€” 60 minutes before all-aboard. This gives you a buffer for taxi delays, cable car queues, or a wrong turn. In 50+ port days across multiple cruises, this rule has never let us down.

The real risk isn't getting lost or being late. It's losing track of time because you're having too good a time. Set an alarm on your phone for 2 hours before all-aboard. When it goes off, start wrapping up and heading back. Simple.

What Should You Know About When Ship Excursions ARE Worth It?

DIY isn't always the right call. Ship excursions genuinely make sense in specific situations:

Dubrovnik Stradun main street with limestone buildings
The Stradun is Dubrovnik's polished-limestone main promenade
  • Tender ports with limited access: At some ports, independent tenders run infrequently. Ship excursions sometimes get priority tendering.
  • Remote sites with no public transport: If a site requires a 90-minute drive on rural roads (like some Ephesus excursions from Kusadasi), organizing private transport can be complicated.
  • First-time cruisers at complex ports: If the idea of navigating Naples independently genuinely stresses you out, the peace of mind of a guided tour has value. That value just happens to cost $100+ per person.
  • Specialty activities: Kayaking, cooking classes, or wine tours often require advance booking and equipment that's easier through an organized excursion.

What Should You Know About How to DIY Successfully?

Independent port exploration isn't hard, but it does require about 30 minutes of preparation per port. Here's the checklist we use: (Dubrovnik Port Authority)

  • Before the cruise: Download offline maps for each port city (Google Maps lets you save areas for offline use). This single step eliminates 90% of the navigation anxiety.
  • Know the dock-to-town route: For each port, know exactly how to get from the ship to the main sightseeing area. Is it walkable? Is there a shuttle? Where's the taxi stand?
  • Have a plan, but keep it flexible: Know your top 2-3 priorities at each port. Don't try to recreate a 6-hour guided tour's itinerary. Pick what matters to you and skip the rest.
  • Carry local currency: While credit cards work at most places in western Mediterranean ports, having 20-50 EUR in cash per port saves hassle at markets, small restaurants, and bus tickets.
  • Know the return logistics: Where do you catch the shuttle/taxi back? How long does the return take? What's the backup plan if the shuttle queue is long?

What Should You Know About The Ports Where DIY Is Easiest?

Some ports are practically designed for independent exploration:

  • Kotor: You walk off the ship directly into Old Town. The fortress is right there. No transport needed.
  • Dubrovnik: Shuttle to Old Town, everything walkable from there.
  • Split: The port is inside the Old Town. Diocletian's Palace is a 2-minute walk from the dock.
  • Venice: Water taxi or vaporetto, then the whole city is yours.

The ports where DIY requires more planning โ€” Santorini (tender logistics), Naples (train to Pompeii), Civitavecchia (train to Rome) โ€” are still very doable, but you need to understand the transport connections in advance.

That's exactly what our port guides are built for: giving you the exact route, the exact prices, and the exact timing so you can explore confidently on your own, without paying $150 per person for someone to hold your hand through a 3-hour bus tour.

What Should You Know About The Bottom Line?

Ship excursions are a convenience product priced at a premium. For the average Mediterranean port, you're paying 3-5x the cost of doing the same thing independently. The "missing the ship" guarantee is real but rarely relevant if you manage your time sensibly.

Try going independent at one easy port first. Kotor or Split are perfect test runs. Once you see how straightforward it is, you'll never go back to the $149-per-person walking tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do this day trip independently without a ship excursion?

Yes. Independent travel is almost always cheaper than ship-organized excursions and gives you more flexibility. The trade-off is that the ship will not wait for you if you are late returning. Our port guides include exact transport schedules and buffer time recommendations.

How much money can you save going independent vs. a ship excursion?

Independent travelers typically save 40-60% compared to ship-organized excursions for the same destinations. A couple can save 80-150 EUR per port day by arranging their own transport and entrance tickets.
