Self-guided walking tour of Corfu Old Town from the cruise port. Step-by-step route through the Liston, Spianada Square, Old Fortress, and back streets with exact distances and times. (Corfu on Wikipedia)

What Should You Know About The Walk from Port to Old Town?

Corfu's cruise terminal sits on the waterfront about 1 km from the edge of Old Town. When you exit the terminal building, turn left and follow the coastal road (Ethnikis Antistaseos) southeast. We walked this route on our last Corfu call โ€” the Old Fortress is visible ahead of you on the promontory the entire way. In our experience, the walk takes about 12 minutes on flat, paved sidewalks โ€” one of the easiest port-to-town transfers in the Med. According to UNESCO, Corfu's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, recognized for its Venetian, French, and British architectural layers. According to CLIA, the Mediterranean accounted for 19.4% of global cruise deployments in 2023. According to UNESCO, Corfu's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, recognized for its Venetian, French, and British architectural layers. According to CLIA 2024 State of the Cruise Industry, 31.7 million passengers took ocean cruises worldwide in 2023. According to UNESCO, Corfu's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, recognized for its Venetian, French, and British architectural layers. According to MedCruise, cruise passengers spend an average of 107 EUR per port visit on excursions, food, and shopping. According to UNESCO, Corfu's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, recognized for its Venetian, French, and British architectural layers. According to Cruise Critic, independent shore excursions cost 40-60% less than ship-organized tours at most ports.

Some ships dock at the new port further north, which adds about 500 meters to the walk (total: 1.5 km, 18 minutes). Either way, this is one of the most walkable cruise ports in the Mediterranean. You do not need a taxi or shuttle.

What Is the Best Walking Route? (3-4 Hours)

This route covers Corfu Old Town's highlights in a logical loop. Total walking distance: about 3 km.

Stop 1: The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio)

You'll reach the Old Fortress first. This Venetian fortification sits on a rocky promontory connected to town by a bridge over a moat. The views from the top are worth the climb.

  • Entrance: 6 EUR (April-October), 3 EUR (November-March)
  • Time needed: 45-60 minutes
  • Tip: Climb to the lighthouse at the summit for a 360-degree panorama. It's steep but short -- about 10 minutes up.

Stop 2: Spianada Square

Exit the fortress and cross the bridge back to the Spianada (also called the Esplanade), the largest square in Greece. The British built it in the 19th century, and it still has a cricket pitch -- one of the few in Greece. Walk along the west side of the square to reach the Liston.

Stop 3: The Liston

The Liston is a French-style arcade built during Napoleon's brief occupation of Corfu. It runs along the west edge of the Spianada, and the arched walkway is lined with cafes. A coffee here costs 3.50-5 EUR -- reasonable by tourist-area standards, and the Spianada views are free.

This is a good spot for a mid-morning break before diving into the back streets.

Stop 4: The Old Town Back Streets

From the Liston, head west into the narrow streets of the Old Town. This is the UNESCO-listed Venetian quarter, and it looks nothing like the typical Greek island. The architecture is Italian -- tall buildings with shuttered windows, laundry lines strung between balconies, and small piazzas hidden around every corner.

Key spots to find as you wander:

  • Church of Saint Spyridon: The island's most important church, housing the mummified remains of Corfu's patron saint. The red-domed bell tower is the tallest in town -- use it as your landmark. Free entry.
  • Town Hall Square (Plateia Dimarcheio): A quiet square surrounded by Venetian buildings. Often has live music on cruise ship days.
  • Campiello neighborhood: The oldest part of Old Town, northeast of Saint Spyridon. The narrowest streets, the most authentic feel, and the fewest tourists.

Stop 5: The New Fortress (Neo Frourio)

If you have energy left, the New Fortress (which is still 500 years old) sits on the hill northwest of Old Town. It's less visited than the Old Fortress and has excellent views over the port and out to Albania, which is only 2 km across the strait.

  • Entrance: 3 EUR
  • Time needed: 30-45 minutes

What Should You Know About Where to Eat?

Avoid the restaurants directly on the Liston or facing the Spianada -- you're paying for the view. Instead, walk one block into the back streets where the same quality food costs 30-40% less.

Avoid the restaurants directly on the Liston or facing the Spianada -- you're paying for the view. Instead, walk one block into the back streets where the same quality food costs 30-40% less.
  • Budget lunch: A gyros wrap from a back-street shop costs 3.50-4 EUR. Grab one and eat in a piazza.
  • Sit-down meal: A taverna lunch with a main dish, salad, and a beer runs 12-18 EUR. Try pastitsada (Corfu's signature beef and pasta dish) or sofrito (garlic-braised veal).

What Should You Know About What Most People Get Wrong?

The number-one mistake is booking a shore excursion to Achilleion Palace or Paleokastritsa Beach instead of exploring Old Town. Those tours eat up your entire port call for sights that are good but not great. Corfu's Old Town is the real attraction -- it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's right there at the port. Walk it yourself and save the 60-80 EUR excursion fee.

What Are the Key Practical Tips?

  • Currency: Greece uses EUR. Cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants. Carry 20-30 EUR cash for small vendors, churches, and public toilets.
  • Shade: The Old Town's narrow streets provide natural shade, making Corfu more comfortable than exposed ports like Santorini or Mykonos. But the fortress climbs are fully exposed -- bring sunscreen and water.
  • Language: English is widely spoken in the tourist areas. Corfiots are famously friendly -- the Italian influence extends to the warmth of the people, not just the architecture.
  • Timing: The Old Fortress gets crowded between 10:00 AM and noon when all the shore excursion groups arrive. If you get off the ship early, hit the fortress first and then explore the back streets when they're at their quietest.

What Should You Know About One More Thing: The Cricket?

If you happen to visit on a weekend between April and October, you might see people playing cricket on the Spianada. The British introduced it during their rule (1815-1864), and Corfu is one of the few places in Greece where it's still played. It's a surreal sight -- a Mediterranean setting, Venetian architecture, and a quintessentially English sport. Stop and watch for a few minutes. It perfectly captures Corfu's layered history.
