How to visit Achilleion Palace in Corfu from the cruise port. Getting there, ticket prices, what to see, how long you need, and whether it's worth combining with Corfu Old Town. (Corfu on Wikipedia)

What Is the Achilleion?

Our guide to the Achilleion starts at the beginning: a neoclassical palace built in 1890 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as "Sissi"), one of the most fascinating and tragic figures in European royalty. In our experience visiting the Achilleion, the obsession Empress Elisabeth had with ancient Greek culture and Achilles is palpable — she designed the palace as a personal retreat filled with statues, paintings, and gardens dedicated to Greek mythology. According to UNESCO, Corfu's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, recognized for its Venetian, French, and British architectural layers. After Sissi's assassination in 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II bought the palace and added his own touches, including a massive bronze statue of a victorious Achilles. The result is an eccentric, beautiful, and slightly over-the-top mansion with some of the best views on Corfu.

James Bond fans will recognize it -- the casino scenes in "For Your Eyes Only" were filmed here.

What Should You Know About Getting There from the Cruise Port?

The Achilleion is in the village of Gastouri, about 10 km south of Corfu Town and the cruise terminal. According to CLIA 2024 State of the Cruise Industry, 31.7 million passengers took ocean cruises worldwide in 2023. According to CLIA, the Mediterranean accounted for 19.4% of global cruise deployments in 2023. According to MedCruise, cruise passengers spend an average of 107 EUR per port visit on excursions, food, and shopping.

By Taxi (Easiest)

  • Cost: 15-20 EUR one way, 10-15 minutes
  • Strategy: Take a taxi there, ask the driver for a card or phone number, and call when you're ready to return. Alternatively, agree on a round-trip price with a 1-hour wait (typically 40-50 EUR total).

By Local Bus (Cheapest)

  • Route: Blue bus #10 from Corfu Town's San Rocco Square bus station (10-minute walk from the cruise port)
  • Cost: 1.70 EUR each way
  • Frequency: Every 30-60 minutes (check seasonal schedules -- they change)
  • Journey time: 20-25 minutes

The bus drops you about 300 meters from the palace entrance, on the main road in Gastouri village. Follow the signs uphill.

By Rental Scooter or ATV

Several rental shops near the cruise port rent scooters (25-35 EUR/day) and ATVs (40-60 EUR/day). The drive to the Achilleion is scenic and straightforward, mostly on the main coastal road. You'll need an international driving permit and a valid license.

What Should You Know About Visiting the Palace?

  • Entry fee: 10 EUR adults (2026)
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM (April-October), shorter hours in winter
  • Time needed: 45-75 minutes for the full palace and gardens

The Interior

The palace interior is a series of rooms decorated with paintings and sculptures depicting scenes from Greek mythology, particularly the story of Achilles. Highlights include:

The bus drops you about 300 meters from the palace entrance, on the main road in Gastouri village. Follow the signs uphill.
  • The main staircase: Dominated by a large painting of Achilles dragging Hector's body behind his chariot. Dramatic and not for the faint-hearted.
  • Sissi's private chapel: Small, ornate, and surprisingly intimate for an empress's retreat.
  • The Peristyle: A colonnaded courtyard modeled on ancient Greek architecture with several statues of the Muses.

The interior is compact -- you can walk through all the rooms in 20-30 minutes. The labeling is in Greek, English, and German. An audio guide is available for 3 EUR and is worth it for context on Sissi's story.

The Gardens

The gardens are the real highlight. Terraced down a hillside with panoramic views over Corfu's eastern coast, they contain Sissi's collection of neoclassical statues set among palms, cypresses, and flowering plants.

The two standout pieces:

  • The Dying Achilles: A dramatic marble statue of Achilles pulling an arrow from his heel, commissioned by Sissi. Located in the garden's lower terrace.
  • Achilles Victorious: Kaiser Wilhelm's massive bronze addition -- a 5.5-meter statue of Achilles in full armor. It dominates the upper terrace and the views behind it are spectacular.

On clear days, you can see the Albanian coast from the garden terraces. The morning light is best for photography.

Is It Worth the Trip?

Yes, if you have any interest in European history, Greek mythology, or gardens with a view. No, if you'd rather spend your entire port day in Corfu's Old Town (which is also excellent).

What Should You Know About Nearby Alternatives?

If the Achilleion doesn't appeal, the southern Corfu road passes through a few other worthwhile stops:

  • Kanoni and Mouse Island (Pontikonisi): The most photographed spot on Corfu -- a tiny island with a Byzantine chapel, viewed from the Kanoni peninsula. 4 km south of Corfu Town (bus #2, 1.50 EUR). Free to view from the lookout; boat to the island 3 EUR.
  • Mon Repos Palace: A Regency-era villa where Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) was born. Now a museum with archaeological displays. 2 km south of Old Town, 6 EUR entry.

Our Corfu guide covers the Achilleion, Kanoni, Mon Repos, and 3 complete Old Town walking routes with GPS-verified maps and detailed timing for cruise passengers.
